5 Life Lessons From Simone Biles

At just 20 years old, Simone Biles is recognised as one of the best gymnasts in the world. She took out 3 gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and was crowned 1st All-Around Olympic Gymnastics Champion. The athlete is a small 4 ft. 8, but her story is colossal.

So how can we tackle life like Biles?

If you are striving to achieve a goal, whether it be qualifying for the Olympic team, the Victorian Gymnastics Championships, or simply learning to master a cartwheel, your heart must be set on it. According to Simone, passion and hard work drive results.

“Always work hard and have fun in what you do because I think that’s when you’re more successful,” she said in an interview.

“You have to choose to do it.”

As clique as it might sound, it is true. Often, your success as a gymnast is a measurement of how hard you have worked. Simone trains 32 hours per week and advises to always go to gym with a mindset to “train harder”.

Don’t try and be the next ‘Simone Biles.’ Make your own mark in the world and live your own dreams, no matter how big or small they may be.

“I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles.”

While it’s easy to get caught up in results and normal to feel disappointed if your success is short of what you expect, remember the experience is the true gold medal at the end of the day. Simone says winning is not everything and instead cherishes all the moments that led her to where is today.

“It’s been a long journey. I’ve enjoyed every single moment of it and I know our team has.”

“To think what I’ve done, its been an amazing experience and I don’t think I could be more proud of myself.”

For Simone, her grandparents have been a huge support network throughout her gymnastics career. Coming from a background of family hardships, the Olympian remains humble and grateful for their help and relishes importance of maintaining a positive connection with team members and coaches.

The stronger your relationships, the stronger your support network and your ability to succeed in all aspects of life!
