Jets Gymnastics was formed on 22 July 1991, when Ross Bouskill took over Monty Gymnastics which was established in 1984 at Montmorency High School.
The Club was initially run from factory 5, 15 Brisbane St Eltham (across the road from Jets Gymnastics – Eltham on Brisbane Street). For 6 months in 1994 the Club conducted a second venue which allowed expansion of its classes and parties at 1/15 Brisbane, before the current Jets Gymnastics - Eltham building at 12 Brisbane Street became available for lease.
The Club commenced with very run down equipment including only foam with carpet remnants acting as crashmats, sparse matting under the beams, a concrete slab painted green for the foyer, and the office consisted of a solitary desk, with a very old, slow computer. Over the subsequent years, all spare money was invested into the Club with vast increases in matting and equipment standards.
Jets then set about developing quality programs for gymnasts, recruiting great coaches to the Club to add to its existing coaches.
Jets was also lucky to have within its ranks a number of incredibly talented athletes who even today are involved in the Club. In 1991 an 11-year-old Lizzy Gardner had already started to show her potential. After a couple of developmental years, Lizzy would go on to represent Victoria for 5 consecutive years, win numerous Victorian Championships (culminating in her achievement of becoming Victorian Level 10 Champion) and Captain the State Team. Lizzy has since gone on to represent Australia at the 2006 & 2010 Winter Olympics and continues to coach with us when she is not overseas training. Our gymnast of the year award is now named in honour of Lizzy’s outstanding contribution to the club.
Jets has also been lucky enough to have started the careers of 2 other Olympians – Stephanie Moorhouse (2004 Athens) and Georgia Bonora (2008 Beijing). Jets can also boast a large number of State Champion gymnasts over this time, many of whom have gone on to coach at the Club and many today who continue a long involvement in the Club. There have been many other significant achievements for Jets Gymnastics over the years, not least of which include the positive influence the Club has had on a huge number of gymnasts which have participated in programs at the centre.
In 2004 we commenced our own High Performance Program aiming to ensure gymnasts from the Eltham area did not have to leave home to achieve Olympic levels. In April 2007 we moved this program into its own venue (2/20 Peel St Eltham) the only gymnastics Club in Australia to have its own dedicated High Performance Centre. We are also very excited that in December 2011 we will be moving this centre to a purpose built facility in Diamond Creek.
After a break (2000-2003) from managing the centre Ross Bouskill returned with a renewed focus on making Jets Gymnastics the best gymnastics centres in the world. Since this time Jets has welcomed new centres in Gisborne (2007), Shepparton (2008), Kidskills Australia (2009) and Bendigo (2010). We are exceptionally excited by the advancements in each of these centres and the opportunities to bring our passion for gymnastics to these areas.
Jets is very focussed on improving the delivery and accessibility of gymnastics to a much wider population and has its eyes firmly set on expanding into more areas over the coming years. Franchising opportunities now exist for the right applicants.
