Jets Gymnastics was founded on July 22nd 1991 by Ross Bouskill. The club took over from Monty Gymnastics which was established in 1984.
The club was initially run from factory 5, 15 Brisbane St Eltham (across from where we are today). For 6 months in 1994 the club conducted a second venue which allowed expansion of its classes and parties at 1/15 Brisbane the before the current building became available for lease (12 Brisbane St).
The club commenced with very run down equipment including only foam with carpet remnants to act as crashmats, matting under beams was sparse, the foyer was a concrete slab painted green and the office consisted of a solitary desk, with a very old slow computer. Over the next years all spare money was invested into the club with vast increases in matting and equipment standards.
Jets then set about developing quality programs for gymnasts, recruiting great coaches to the club to add to its existing coaches. In particular the depth of knowledge that Katie Watts, Donna Bronstein, Brian Doody & Brad Edwards contributed to the club has been immense. This added to existing coaches Sarah Beecroft and Belinda Seeley who have been mainstays of the club over 15+ years.
Jets was also lucky to have within its ranks a number of incredibly talented athletes who still today have involvement in the club. In 1991 an 11 year old Lizzy Gardner had already started to show her potential, after a couple of developmental years Lizzy would go on to Represent Victoria for 5 consecutive years, win numerous Victorian Championships (culminating in becoming the Level 10 Victorian Champion) and Captain the State Team. She has since gone on to Represent Australia at the 2006 Winter Olympics and coaches with us when she is not overseas training.
In 1993 Jets commenced an Elite program for girls under the direction of Katie Watts. A talented group of girls was selected from within the club and through a selection process conducted at local primary schools. Within this group was a 5 year old Stephanie Moorhouse – Stephanie moved through this program quickly and through the VIS eventually represented Australia at the 2003 World Championships (Team bronze Medalist) and 2004 Olympic Games (Individual Finalist).
In 1995 Liz Wong joined us from Balwyn Gymnastics Club. Liz had already been Victorian Champion and chose to join our team. She went on to win the 1995 & 1996 Australian Championships with us before moving full time to the AIS where she performed exceptionally well representing Australia at various overseas events and making the Sydney 2000 Olympic Squad where she missed final selection due to injury.
Jets has also had a large number of State Champion gymnasts over this time many of whom have gone on to coach at the club and many today who continue a long involvement in the club, including Paul Haydock, Sara Kyne and Linden Skerry.
The club can boast many achievements over its years, not least of which is the positive influence it has had on a huge number of gymnasts which have participated in programs at the centre.
On the fame side of things Jets has also been involved in an episode of Neighbors, filmed in a movie “The Damnation of Harvey McHugh” and performed at a special promotion for McDonalds 1996 Olympics promotion.
In January 2000 Kidskills Australia purchased the management license to the club which provided a much needed break for owner Ross Bouskill. Kidskills managed the operations of the club from 2000-2003 before handing back the reigns to Ross in January 2004.
This changeover signifies a significant change in the attitude and processes of the Club. A huge investment in equipment and commitment to excellence sees the club aiming to be at the forefront of gymnastics in Australia both at a competition level for International Level Gymnasts and also as a business and service level in all of the operations of the club. |
